Have a look at this rather well written NY Times article about Major Zeman and the purported remake. I must say I am not very enthusiastic about the idea of milking and destroying Zeman's legacy for a quick buck.
Warning: The article also features opinions of Jan "go fuck yourself, I know Glasgow" Culik. I recommend skipping the last three paragraphs.

Heh, the one about J.C. was particulary "trefny";)
Some people misss their character. Or was that backbone?
I didn't read that article (I don't like to register on many pages), but I think some old bones are best to remain deep under ground. Nemocnice na kraji města po 20 letech ("Hospital at the end of the town after 20 years") showed a fine example of how bad can sequels / remakes be. There was also a rumor not long ago, that Czech TV will make a seqeuel of the tv show Návštěvníci ("Visitors", and I don't mean that french movie with Jean Reno). I hope they won't make it. I dont' want them to completely ruin one of my favorite tv shows.
lurker de zerg: You are right about "Návštěvníci", but i think that present czech cinematography is hardly missing science-fiction.
Perk: yes and that's sad. Sad but understandable - sci-fi movies often require tons of special efects, which are very expensive. Czech movie studios aren't just that rich (or that good) to make a sci-fi movie that at least can be compared to bellow-average sci-fi tv shows (ie Star Trek Voyager). I hope this situation will improve sometimes. There are so many good czech sci-fi novels just waiting to be filmed... and not only them...
Are you aware the sentence "Czech cinematography is hardly missing sci-fi" means "Czech cinematography does NOT need more sci-fi"?
Oops, really? I mean "badly"
A propos...
fuxoft- what do YOU think about czech sci-fi chances?
